Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters
A recent study indicates that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing these drugs should be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication explain a intense resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
