A minimum of 13 individuals perish and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in national projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
